Lucy was inspired to pursue her passion for food justice issues after volunteering at Gateway’s 14th Annual Matters of the Mind Luncheon with chef, food activist, and renowned author, Bryant Terry.
“I’m really interested in Bryant Terry’s approach to changing food policy through education and community connection,” said Lucy. “His motto, ‘Start with the visceral to ignite the cerebral and end with the political’ really resonated with me and shaped what I want to do in college and beyond.”
Lucy will attend the University of Puget Sound in the fall of 2018 and will double-major in environmental policies and decision making, and communications. She is excited about being part of the Posse Program because of the integrity of her peers. “When you’re in a Posse, you’re not just there for yourself,” said Lucy. "You’re there for your peers as well.” One of the things she is most excited about college is forming community and camaraderie with her Posse group.
She is an active member of her church community and co-leads the food pantry at her church once a month. She also interned at the San Francisco Botanical Garden after volunteering there during Gateway’s Community Service Day.
If she could give one piece of advice to incoming freshmen it would be to “say yes.” “Saying yes to all the different opportunities that Gateway has to offer can lead to things you never knew you were interested in!”
