As part of Gateway Impact’s ongoing commitment to sharing best practices with educators everywhere, Gateway leaders explored belonging, allyship and inclusivity and how feeling seen and heard can transform school culture at the “Elevating Diverse Voices” webinar on April 7. Using case-studies and a Q&A format, speakers explored sexism, student-designed Affinity celebrations and the importance of adult modeling for antiracism work.
SEL Coordinator Carrie Mar opened the webinar with student struggles returning back to school and the citywide student-led protests over sexual harrassment. Listening and addressing students' concerns led to new professional development, thoughtful advisory meetings and a new activist group on campus.
Gateway Middle School Principal Jai David shared how powerful student-inspired Black History Month celebrations became the new playbook for honoring all future Affinity Months.
Stephanie Khaziran, Co-Principal at Gateway High School explained how transformative SEL flipped the focus on teachers, resulting in ground-breaking educator support and anti-racist modeling for kids.
These thoughtful conversations will be wrapped into sessions at our Powerful Learners Conference next fall. Gateway Impact is committed to sharing our best practices to inspire great teaching. Look for conference registration details later this summer.
