Gateway Public Schools is a "Safe Zone" for all Students

Sharon Olken at Gateway Public Schools

Dear Gateway Families,

The safety, achievement, and celebration of our diverse community are at the heart of our mission at Gateway Public Schools. We know that our schools, as well as society as a whole, benefit from the strengths and contributions of each of us.

At Gateway, we are committed to providing a safe learning space for each and every one of our students, regardless of race, religion, and immigration status.

In light of the recent political developments around immigration, Gateway Public Schools recently approved a Safe School Zone Resolution. The resolution affirms that:

  • Gateway will not consent to searches by ICE Officers to the fullest extent of the law, and we will maintain the confidentiality of student records and personally identifiable information.

  • We will provide resources to students and their families about their rights and practices that keep them safe.

  • We will empower our students through curriculum focused on social justice, by providing a structured and safe space to talk about current issues that affect them, and by inviting their voices in determining how to resist oppression.

  • We will lead by example. We will respect diversity of all forms, ensure differences of opinions are heard and protected, and actively listen.

To the fullest extent provided by the law, Gateway will never release the immigration status of our students, families, and employees.

Gateway Public Schools believes that all students have the right to learn, thrive, and achieve. We refuse to accept anything less than an excellent college-preparatory education for all of our students in a safe and welcoming environment. We will continue to show our students that they matter, that they are safe, and that they make our society a better place.

Thank you,

Sharon Olken
