Meet Gateway’s Next Generation

Sixth grade students in class

Students and teachers alike may be in the full swing of summer, but August is just around the corner, and with it a whole new cohort of sixth and ninth graders who will be joining us at Gateway for the first time. Rosters for both schools are now finalized, with an anticipated student body of 510 at Gateway High and 310 at Gateway Middle School, respectively.

Approximately 40% of GHS’ incoming freshman class will be matriculating from Gateway Middle, a testament to the strong academic experience and tight-knit community fostered at both schools that families want to remain a part of.

Our new students will continue to strengthen our community’s diversity, not only in terms of ethnicity and socio-economic background, but also through sharing their languages, learning styles and unique perspectives with their peers and teachers. Across both schools, just over 60% of incoming students identify as young people of color, approximately 25% have a learning difference, and approximately 55% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Gateway is part of the San Francisco Unified School District and students apply and enroll through the district’s lottery system, a process designed to provide equitable access to the range of opportunities available in San Francisco’s public schools. We look forward to welcoming all of our new students in person on Monday, August 16!
