On October 17th, Gateway Public Schools hosted the 11th Annual Matters of the Mind Luncheon, featuring honored speaker, Jeffrey Toobin. Mr. Toobin is a legal analyst for CNN, staff writer for The New Yorker, and author of much-lauded books The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court as well as The Oath: The Obama White House and The Supreme Court.
Mr. Toobin was proudly introduced by Gateway Middle School students Isabel Frazier and Da’Mario Watson, both of whom represent the best in Gateway Schools with their passion for life and commitment to their schoolwork. Mr. Toobin, a gifted orator in his own right, expressed a palpable passion for our country’s legal system through his views on the state of the Supreme Court and its own unique political history. Yet, before Mr. Toobin took the stage, Gateway Senior Nigel Garcia shared his own story of finding his voice and the power of words. It is a rare moment, indeed, when silence befalls the hallways of Gateway High School. During Nigel’s spoken-word poem, one could have heard a pin drop. Check out his speech below:
All of us at Gateway thank everyone who attended, each of the speakers, and the formidable army of volunteers who put together such a lovely event. We are a most fortunate community, and the luncheon celebrated just that.
