Gateway Middle School and Gateway High School were among 275 schools across California who were recently honored under the Gold Ribbon Schools Program. Only three schools in San Francisco received this award.
Schools who met academic achievement targets set out by the California Department of Education were invited to apply for the award, and 477 middle schools and high schools across California applied.
“I am extremely proud of Gateway High School and Gateway Middle School for being honored as Gold Ribbon Schools. These awards are a testament to the excellent teaching, learning, and collaborating that happens inside the walls of our schools. So much great work is happening in public schools across California. We are honored to be included in such an amazing group of schools,” said Sharon Olken, Executive Director of Gateway Public Schools.
Gateway High School was recognized for the success of its Advanced Placement and Honors Classes Initiative, which focuses on expanding access to and equity in these rigorous and prestigious classes. As a result of this initiative, 90% of Gateway students will participate in at least one Advanced Placement or honors class before they graduate, and the school has nearly doubled the number of such classes.
Gateway Middle School was recognized for its school-wide approach to Process of Learning Development. By helping students understand how they learn best and develop the specific academic strategies and non-cognitive skills needed to be successful in secondary school and college, Gateway Middle School has decreased the achievement gap.
