College and Career Readiness

We believe there are as many pathways to a successful future as we have unique students to dream them up. Whether they dream of being the first person in their family to attend college, owning their own business, serving their country, curing diseases or organizing their community, our aim is to make sure every student graduates with as many options for post-high school life as possible.

College and Career Readiness @ Gateway High

Gateway High’s college counseling class is at the heart of our approach to preparing students for life after high school. As a graduation requirement, all students are enrolled in the course in the spring semester of their junior and fall of their senior years, where they learn all about choosing majors, finding schools that fit, writing applications that stand out, and seeking scholarships and financial aid.

Students are also encouraged to pursue at least one internship while in high school to explore careers of interest, gain professional experience,  and make contacts and references for the future. Intern hosts typically have interns assist with day-to-day operations and special projects while observing how the company operates.

GHS students have interned in workplaces such as the Maxine Hall Health Center, London Breed’s Office, the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office, ValueAct Capital, and many more.

It’s never too early to start dreaming big about the future! GMS students are provided with a wealth of opportunities for early career exploration and to connect with mentors. Each week, students can take advantage of schoolwide tutoring services to make sure that not only are strong academics setting them up for future success, but to connect with adults and high school students who can provide advice and insight into possible future paths.

Each Spring, GMS hosts a popular Career Day, where students meet and interact with adults representing a wide variety of professional sectors and career fields. You never know who you’ll connect with!

Past participants have included employees from Lucasfilm, Salesforce, Google, broadcast news and much more.
