Trustee

Harper feels fortunate to have seen Gateway grow from its inception- her mother, Lisille Matheson, helped to start the school, working to get the charter passed and find Gateway's first home. With a deep belief in and connection to Gateway's mission, she is grateful for the opportunity to serve on the board. Harper graduated from Tisch School of the Arts and later received an MBA from Stern at NYU. She has spent her career in the hospitality industry, helping to build, finance and operate restaurants in New York and San Francisco.

Dan Carr

Trustee

Dan grew up in a small New England town, attended college at Boston’s Northeastern University, and then headed west to San Francisco in the fall of 1995. Dan spent the next decade traveling the globe as a professional touring musician and putting his time in as a bartender and waiter when he was back home. As with many musicians and artists, Dan eventually found his way back to the services industry and has spent most of the last two decades managing restaurants in Vermont, Oregon, and San Francisco. He helped open the cool SF classic Urban Putt in 2014, and captained that crazy ship until the pandemic forced it’s temporary closure in 2020. Now Dan leans on his small business experience as a financial sales advisor for Elavon.

Dan and his wife Amanda and son Dash, a Gateway student, share their Sunset home with a gaggle of furry family members and love to explore the magic of Ocean Beach and Golden Gate Park. Dan and Amanda are both regular contributors to the Gateway staff lunches, and enjoy being active members of the school community. The Carr’s like to travel, love to cook, and very much enjoy the occasional competitive game night!

Mary Plant-Thomas (she/her)

Biology and AP Biology Teacher

Mary has called the Gateway BioLab her home away from home for over nine years and currently teaches tenth grade Biology and AP Biology. In addition to teaching, Mary has also served as a Faculty Representative to the Board, the Co-Chair of the Faculty Affairs Committee, has mentored a number of student teachers, and fostered partnerships with UCSF and BABEC. Mary earned her undergraduate degree from an unconventional combination of Wellesley College and UC San Diego. She then went on to get her Masters in Education from UC Santa Barbara's Teacher Education Program where she was able to participate in an international exchange that enabled her to observe another education system by student-teaching in Denmark! More recently, alongside two other Gateway colleagues, Mary was selected to participate in the two-year Hollyhock Fellowship at Stanford University. In addition to loving teaching and biology, Mary has a passion for theatre and can frequently be found rushing off to see plays all around the Bay Area.
