Biography

Tony comes to Gateway after spending last year as the principal of REALM Charter Middle School in Berkeley with more than 25 years as a teacher and instructional coach focused on equity and social-emotional learning. 

He attended McClymonds High School in West Oakland and completed college at U.C. Berkeley.

Throughout his educational career, he has placed emphasis on creating transformative culture in schools, providing support to teachers, and strengthening family support. Read his message to the community here.

Ellyn Rosenthal

Learning Specialist
Biography

Ellyn Rosenthal has taught at Gateway for four years. As the 10th grade Learning Specialist, Ellyn teaches Learning Skills 10, co-teaches Humanities 10 and co-teaches Geometry. She received a bachelor's degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and a master’s degree in Special Education from the University of San Francisco. A Bay Area native, Ellyn is an avid San Francisco Giants fan.

Mirna Salinas

Biography

Mirna Salinas was born and raised in El Salvador. She earned her bachelors degree in Business Administration and Accounting.  She is a proud mom of two boys, one Gateway High School Alumni and the other a current junior at Gateway High School. Mirna really enjoys working with families and students, especially helping the Latino community. She love music and spending time with her family and dog, Otis. She is also a big Giants fan.

Allyson Schoolcraft

Assistant Principal
Biography

Allyson Schoolcraft is the Assistant Principal of Gateway Middle School. Prior to joining Gateway, Allyson taught sixth through eighth graders in the East Bay and Los Angeles. Allyson has a BFA from USC and an MA in Education from UCLA. She also recently completed her MA in Educational Leadership from UC Berkeley’s Principal Leadership Institute. Outside of school, Allyson enjoys reading, sewing, and spending time with her husband and two cats.

Charlotte Sivanich
Gateway High School
Math Teacher
Biography

Charlotte has recently relocated to the Bay Area after living and teaching in the Minnesota for the past six years. She’s a 2012 graduate of St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, where she majored in math and had concentrations in statistics, environmental studies, and educational studies. Charlotte is currently working on her National Board Certification of Teaching. In the classroom, Charlotte enjoys sharing her love of math puzzles with students, using the classroom space to move around and be active, and incorporating group roles to empower students to work together. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys running, eating cheese, visiting National Parks, and has just recently learned how to shoot clay pigeons! Charlotte teaches because she enjoys helping students uncover strengths and skills that they never knew they had. She’s looking forward to many learning adventures this school year!

Dierdre Smith

Student Support Coordinator
Biography

Dierdre Smith, a San Francisco native and alumni of Balboa High School, is our Student Support Coordinator. Before coming to Gateway, Dierdre had a varied and successful career as an airline travel consultant, home-school teacher and community activist. As our Student Support Coordinator, Dierdre assists students with a variety of issues from tardiness, lost items and illness, to providing a listening ear. She enjoys traveling abroad, playing tourist in the city, and quiet getaways in Sonoma/Napa County.

Jeff Sprague
Gateway High School
Humanities Teacher
Biography

Jeff Sprague teaches Humanities 11 and Civics at Gateway. He earned his BA in American Studies from Yale and an MA from the University of Texas at Austin. He also received his MA in Education from Stanford. Jeff has been teaching for eleven years and brings a passion for issues of social justice to his teaching of American literature, history and government. When he is not teaching, Jeff enjoys playing guitar and hanging out with his family.
