Interim Assistant Principal, Humanities and Learning Seminar Teacher
Biography

Lucy joined the Gateway community as an eighth grade Humanities and Learning Seminar teacher in 2013. Before coming to Gateway, she taught eighth grade in Chicago and English in South Korea. She has a BA in English and Political Science from the University of North Carolina (Go Tarheels!) and a MA in Teaching from the University of Chicago’s Urban Teacher Education Program. In her free time you might find her cooking up some tasty food, going to a concert, or riding her bike around town.

Albert Hill

Biography

Growing up in Baltimore, Albert wanted to be a scientist from a young age. After graduating from the Baltimore City Public School system, minus a few years in South Africa, he went on to major in Math and Music at Wesleyan University.  After college he moved to Oakland where, over the past 11 years, he has taught and tutored math, physics, yoga, and fire performance, consumed many cups of tea, and read a lot of good books. He likes understanding systems, plausibly imagined hypotheticals, and the unexpected.

Racquel Huerta

Biography

Racquel is originally from Southern California and has lived in San Francisco with her family since 2008. She has been a part of the Gateway family since 2011 as a Learning Specialist at Gateway Middle School. She is also a proud mom of two Gateway High School Gators (class of 2015 and class of 2018). Racquel earned her B.A. in History at Pt. Loma Nazarene University in San Diego and her M.A. in Special Education at SFSU. Outside of school Racquel enjoys traveling, music, reading, baseball games, and pilates.

Jazzlyn Kaleohano

Biography

Jazzlyn Kaleohano joined Gateway May of 2018 as the Registrar and Data Reporting Manager. Prior to joining Gateway she worked at a charter school in the East Bay for 8 years where she gained skills in varying areas of school office administrative work. She was born and raised in the East Bay but now enjoys living in San Francisco and is pursuing a BS in Visual Communication Design.

Rachel Kamen

Biography

Rachel Kamen started at Gateway Public Schools in December 2015 as the Director of Partnerships. In this role, Rachel leads efforts in building community partnerships to augment enrichment opportunities Gateway offers students in the classroom and beyond. Rachel is a nonprofit professional with a passion for youth empowerment, education, community engagement and social justice. She has held leadership roles in multiple Bay Area nonprofits, including the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, Project Open Hand, and We Teach Science Foundation. Rachel received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Western Ontario, and completed a Master’s in Nonprofit Administration from the University of San Francisco. In her free time you will find Rachel on the move outdoors: hiking, running, at the beach, or on a tennis court.

Sam Kary
Gateway Middle School
Humanities and Learning Seminar Teacher
Biography

Prior to teaching in San Francisco, Sam worked as a Teach For America corps member for three years in Richmond. He has his Bachelor of Arts in English and Spanish from the University of Colorado and his Master of Arts in English from The Ohio State University. Sam is originally from the Bay Area and enjoys cycling and skiing in his spare time. He also loves to travel and have adventures, and speaks conversational Spanish and Portuguese.

Stephanie Khaziran

Assistant Principal
Biography

Ms. Khaziran joined the Gateway family in 2015 and is the Assistant Principal of Student Life. She grew up in Los Angeles, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Sociology. She moved to San Francisco in order to pursue a Master of Arts from USF in Counseling Psychology. After several years of working as a school counselor in San Francisco, Ms. Khaziran attended the UC Berkeley Principal Leadership Institute, where she earned her Master of Arts in Education. When she isn't running around the halls of Gateway, Ms. Khaziran spends her time teaching graduate students at USF and exploring the Bay Area.

Nicholas Lake

Paraprofessional
Biography

The 2016-2017 school year represents Nick's fourth year at Gateway High School. He works in the Learning Center as a para, offering support to all children in the classes in which he is placed. Additionally, he has been working with the robotics program since its inception in the 2013-14 school year. He looks forward to the challenge of teaching computer science in the 2015-16 school year, and hopes to soon begin work on his teaching credential so that he may serve as a full-time classroom teacher.

Originally from Los Angeles, Nick took his B.A. in history from California State University, Long Beach. He has many hobbies and interests, such as gardening, playing cello, reading & writing, and woodworking.

Helen Liang
Gateway High School
Learning Seminar Teacher
Biography

Helen earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising and Communications & Rhetorical Studies from Syracuse University and earned her Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of San Francisco, with dual concentration in School Counseling and Clinical Counseling. In addition to teaching at Gateway, Helen concurrently offers individual psychotherapy in downtown San Francisco, practicing through the auspices of Grateful Heart Holistic Therapy Center. Prior to coming to Gateway, Helen has worked for Teach For America, Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, UNICEF, and Agile Mind. Helen finds great joy in spending quality time with loved ones, doing arts and crafts, taking long walks, and spending time in her community garden.
