Position Overview

The Dean of Students will work closely with other school leaders, staff, and student leaders to create a safe, supportive, and structured school community.  The Dean of Students is charged with overseeing and developing student discipline, supervision, community and culture building, and restorative practices. This is an 11-month position.

Major Duties and Responsibilities of the Dean of Students

Student Discipline

  • Serve as the point person for responding to student behavioral issues
  • Strengthen existing systems and develop appropriate new systems for following up on and responding to behavioral issues, including meeting with families and students and developing and implementing individual behavior plans
  • Keep accurate student discipline records, documenting all conferences, suspensions, and phone calls for behavior
  • Communicate regularly with faculty regarding student discipline and follow-up
  • Help to reinforce the effective use of a schoolwide behavior plan through the use of PBIS
  • Support students in developing self-regulation and positive, effective coping skills
  • Meet with families to discuss student progress and behavior growth plans
  • Apply appropriate consequences for behavior including detention, in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, and alternatives to suspension
  • Drive implementation of school-wide behavior management and reward system
  • Ensure due process and legal compliance regarding all student disciplinary actions

Restorative Practices

  • Develop a vision for restorative practices and establish systems to support a tiered approach to a restorative community
  • Support conflict resolution through restorative conferences in partnership with students, faculty, and families
  • Train staff in restorative practices to establish, improve, and repair relationships between students and/or staff members
  • Hold restorative reentry meetings in response to student discipline
  • Engaging student leaders to plan events that build a community and culture of joy

Leadership and Supervision

  • Contribute to a school campus that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive of all students
  • Support staff in building positive relationships and community in classrooms, especially as it relates to issues of discipline, classroom management, and belonging
  • Be highly present and visible during school hours, ensuring that the school has an appropriately supportive and structured school culture, which includes proactively circulating throughout the school campus
  • Support crisis management efforts in collaboration with school leaders
  • Develop and manage supervision schedule, including student arrival, transitions, lunch, dismissal, and school events
  • Support efforts to ensure that all students have excellent attendance and arrive to school on-time
  • Oversee support of the Athletics Department in collaboration with the Athletic Director

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to Gateway’s unique educational mission and to equitable outcomes for all students, and ability to translate this mission into practice
  • Commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse learning profiles
  • Ability to develop strong relationships and work collaboratively, creatively, and flexibly with students, staff, and families
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills 
  • Deep understanding of and/or willingness to be trained in Restorative Practices
  • At least 3 years experience working with high school students in a comparable school context
  • Prior leadership experience in a relevant role preferred
  • Bilingual candidates and candidates of color are strongly encouraged to apply
  • BA or BS degree; advanced degree in education preferred

SALARY RANGE AND BENEFITS

The salary range for this position is $90,000-$105,000 plus benefits. GPS offers an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental and vision insurance (employee premiums covered by Gateway and additional stipends for dependents), life insurance, six weeks paid vacation, ten sick days, and 15 paid holidays, professional development opportunities, a retirement savings plan with employer match, onsite parking, and, if qualified, student loan repayment support.
